Where PVDF coating is commonly considered
Specified liquid fluoropolymer coating systems are commonly considered for exterior architectural aluminium where long-term weather exposure and colour retention matter. Performance depends on the complete approved system, including pretreatment and controlled application.
The project specification should identify the required system and acceptance criteria. The term “PVDF” alone is not a complete coating requirement.
Where powder coating may be appropriate
Powder coating can provide a durable and versatile finish for many architectural applications, including interiors, sheltered areas and exterior work when the specified powder system is suitable. It offers many colours and textures, but performance varies by resin chemistry, pretreatment and application quality.
For exterior use, confirm that the selected grade and warranty basis match the location rather than relying on the general description “powder coated”.
Compare finishes against actual project conditions
- Project location, climate and sunlight, rain, salt or pollution exposure
- Exterior facade, interior space or sheltered area
- Required colour durability, gloss retention and appearance
- Design requirement, texture, metallic effect and approved sample
- Budget and cost of the complete specified system
- Maintenance access, cleaning and replacement expectations
- Applicable specification, test method and warranty requirement
Sample approval and process control remain essential
Whichever finish is selected, agree the substrate, pretreatment, coating build-up, colour reference, gloss or texture, approved sample and inspection method. Visible panels should also be reviewed for batch consistency where relevant.
A manufacturer can review compatibility with fabrication, but final selection should follow the project specification and responsible design team’s approval.
